So much so that we've been making special visitors honourary Calgarians with our White Hat ceremony for about 60 years. Today, the white Smithbilt cowboy hat is an internationally recognized symbol of Calgary and our Western hospitality. Whether they’re here with over a million other people for the annual Calgary Stampede, or just visiting friends, people always comment on how safe, clean and friendly the city is.
The weather in Calgary is also part of the appeal, thanks to Chinook winds that can warm a winter day by 15°C (27°F) in a matter of hours. And while summer days can near 30°C (86°F), most evenings cool for comfortable sleeping when the sun sets. Speaking of the sun — our northern latitude means our summer days are longer. On peak summer days, we enjoy daylight until 10pm — perfect for a round of golf or lounging on a patio. That big sky of ours also shines down more days of sunshine than any other major Canadian city. Calgary is in Mountain Standard Time, the same as Denver, and observes daylight savings.
Certainly, Calgary has a cowboy spirit. It’s entrepreneurial. It’s charming. But it’s also refined and cosmopolitan. The sparkling skyline reaches out of the foothills just as Calgary reaches out to the world. From international flavours — Calgary has one of the largest Chinatowns in Canada — to international headquarters, the city welcomes the world.
Calgary also presents a contradiction in that it’s both business and pleasure. Honestly. The two really do intermingle with great efficiency. Maybe it’s the numerous golf courses. Perhaps it’s the countless corporate parties during Stampede. Or it’s just because we’re so easy to get along with. Regardless of why, Calgarians know how to throw a dash of fun into even the busiest day.
